Bao Lam was likely stolen from the forest as a cub in 2008 or 2009; she has lived her entire life in captivity.

Bao Lam and 11 other bears were sold to the DamB’ri Waterfall Resort in Vietnam. The bears were going to be entertainment for the guests; forced to dance and do tricks.

Bao Lam is an Asian black bear, also known as a moon bear. These bears are native to East Asia and parts of the Himalayas and is listed as a threatened species.

For eight years, Bao Lam was miserable at DamB’ri. She didn’t receive proper veterinary care or nutrition, and she lived in a cramped cage.

To make matters worse, the 11 other bears she had come to know all died from the neglect they suffered at the resort.

Suffering from a cataract, cracked paws and teeth, and damage to her front legs, Bao Lam had difficulty walking. Because she had lived in captivity, she would never survive in the wild.

Animals Asia and the Vietnam Bear Sanctuary was finally able to get the DamB’ri Waterfall Resort to surrender Bao Lam to their care! One of the first things the group did for Bao Lam is give her a healthy snack!

Bao Lam was put into a truck for the four-day journey to the Vietnam Bear Sanctuary – her new forever home.

The sanctuary director Heidi was thrilled to see Bao Lam arrive safe and sound!

After 45 days in quarantine, Bao Lam will be able to meet her new family and spend the rest of her life in bear heaven!
