Nathan Boos had been adopted as a newborn baby but didn’t grow up questioning what had happened to his birth parents. Then on an unassuming day years later, he would find out something astonishing on social media. And the shocking revelation would change his life forever.

Twenty-seven-year-old Boos lives in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, where he grew up. A student of welding at Chippewa Valley Technical College, he now runs his own trucking company and works for Rock Solid Transport. He is also engaged to Nicole Marie Hein, and they have set a wedding date for May 2019.

Boos grew up knowing that he had been adopted at birth. But the trucker had no desire to find out the names of his biological parents. When he reached junior high, any sense that he wasn’t a part of his adoptive family had gone away and he stopped being curious.

However, Boos found out something he had in common with his birth father one day a few years ago. During a work trip to Georgia from Illinois, his adoptive dad decided to accompany him. And one night during the journey, he would make a surprising admission.

From a young age Boos had wanted to become a truck driver. And the man who raised him told him it must have been in his blood. His biological dad had also been a trucker, he said.

The news interested Boos – but didn’t think much more of it. “I said, ‘I probably met my father when I was trucking on the road,’” he told the Washington Post. “I probably met him at a truck stop and didn’t know it. It wasn’t something I was hell-bent on figuring out.”

In July 2016 Boos began a new job at Rock Solid Transport, where he still works today. There, he met Robert Degaro, who had been at the company for several months. Although significantly older than him at 55, they quickly became friends.

Degaro and Boos bonded over their shared sense of humor and they both enjoyed teasing their colleagues. As time went on, they began to chat more and became friends on Facebook. There, they would often send each other funny comments. And it didn’t go unnoticed.

One day in January 2018, Boos’ adoptive mother asked him to sit with her. That’s when she pulled up a photo from the social networking site. She then showed it to her son – and told him about an incredible coincidence that would change everything.

“I just want you to know that you’re friends with your birth father on Facebook,” Boos’ adopted mom told him. The picture she showed him was of Degaro. And the trucker admitted that he could hardly believe it.

“I [said], ‘Oh my God, I work with this guy,’” Boos recalled to the Washington Post, adding that his mom didn’t immediately understand. “She’s like, ‘Yeah, have you seen him out on the road?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I just talked to him – two hours ago! Mom, he’s not just another truck driver. He works at Rock Solid.’”

Boos’ mother couldn’t believe that they’d known each other for so long. And her son took some time to wrap his head around the news. Then he decided to try and gently drop the bombshell on Degaro by telling him through Facebook.

Afterwards Boos gave Degaro his birth mom’s name and asked if they had been acquaintances. When he revealed that she was his ex-wife, Boos couldn’t believe it. “I just found out that she’s my biological mother. My mom told me last night,” he told him on Facebook.

The news hit Degaro hard. “I [nearly] fell out of my seat. I’m like, oh my God,” he said to television station WEAU. Their conversation moved to the telephone, where Boos discovered for the first time how he had come to be adopted. Degaro’s then-wife had fallen pregnant, but their marriage had ran into trouble and they struggled to make ends meet.

The couple found out that the baby would be born early and need an emergency C-section. However, Degaro knew that he wasn’t prepared for parenthood, nor for looking after a child who may have health problems. So he and his wife decided to put their baby up for adoption.

Degaro’s wife at the time found Boos a loving family – but he didn’t realize just how close to home they were. “Back then I wasn’t much of a dad. His biological mom had chosen the adoptive parents because they were somewhat related. Distant cousins, I believe, but I didn’t know that,” he told the Washington Post.

Degaro added to the newspaper, “[I always wondered] where [Boos] was at and how he turned out. Now it’s just nice to be able to know he turned out to be successful and such a good person.” And Boos was surprised that they had been friends for so long without realizing they were related.

“I couldn’t stop laughing, because we had been working with each other for almost two years at this point and hadn’t figured this out,” Boos told the Washington Post. “To him, it was a shock and to me it was a shock, and we didn’t know what to say to each other. It was so unbelievable. Who in their right mind would think that after 20-some years, you’d actually find out where you come from or find your kid and you had no idea where he went?”

Degaro admitted that he and Boos are still figuring out how to navigate their unusual situation. “It’s still kind of a shock and there’s days I’m not sure exactly what to say or how to act,” he told WEAU. “I mean, he is my son but yet we didn’t have that father-son relationship growing up and then we became working partners before we knew who we really were.”

Boos’ father Degaro, who is engaged himself to fiancée Dee Stanford, had already been invited to his son’s upcoming wedding in 2019. But his appearance at the nuptials will now be even more special as he’ll be there as family. And they’re confident their friendship will continue to grow now that they know the reason behind their strong connection. Boos told the Washington Post, “We’re just taking one day at a time, one mile at a time, as we say.”
