High school romances are old news now, but have you heard about preschool romances? When they met at the age of barely three years old, during their preschool days, Matt Grodsky and Laura Sheel forged an extraordinary bond and became inseparable. He had even professed his love of her to their entire class. Unfortunately, as they became older, they enrolled at different schools and the distance between them started to grow and, over time, had cut their closeness to an end. Well, until fate brought them together again...

Preschool Meeting of Matt and Laura

Matt and Laura’s story has its roots in Phoenix, Arizona, dating back whole 25 years. At their preschool and only three years old these two immediately became best friends.

After noticing Laura on the playground, Matt had realized he wanted to be friends with her and started going everywhere she went which led to her quickly starting to like him and resulted in them becoming attached at the hip.

Their parents didn’t think their friendship was unusual, but very cute - they were only children, after all.

Laura Had Him Pegged as a Dork

For the entire day, Matt would follow Laura on the playground because he knew he wanted to be her friend. During his interview with Today, he said: “I don’t remember the first time I saw her, but she was always a girl who let me follow her around.”

In the beginning, Laura thought Matt was a complete dork because he followed her around, but then she saw how amusing and caring Matt indeed was, and so they became best friends fast. They would play hide and go seek on the playground and they liked to playfully ignore their naptime. Naturally, they did everything together.

And so, the two best friends wanted more time for playing and outside of preschool, too.

The Inseparable Pair

Just hanging out at preschool wasn’t cutting it for these two, Matt and Laura wanted to spend more time together. Their parents had by then become acquaintances and so the kids started having play dates on weekends as well. Every weekend was fun, especially when their parents took them to the movies when Matt would hold Laura’s hand if they were watching a scary one.

It was apparent the two were joined at the hip, and even though Matt was only four years old then, he definitely wanted to tell the world how Laura made him feel.

Matt Was Always Ready to Impress

Oh, just remember the funny things we did as kids to impress each other. Those were the good old times when we would boast about out Pokemon collection or try to swing exceptionally high on the swings.

Because Matt loved his best friend, he was determined to make an impression at all times. His most popular way of doing this was to repeat the lines off by heart from the Disney movies he liked the most, such a The Lion King.

Laura Was Matt’s Lecturer

As Matt was trying his best to leave an impression on Laura, she, in turn, impressed him without breaking a sweat. She was the one who taught Matt many things such as how to use the swings and draw rolling hills. She even taught him the proper way of eating string cheese.

It might not sound like a lot when you are an adult, but having someone teach you these things as a child means they become part of your precious memories forever.

Petite Paramours

When they were just four years old, everybody could see that Matt and Laura were best buds. It was evident with the way they were inseparable while at preschool. And the way they spent their weekends as well. Their bond was definitely exceptional and everybody assumed they were two petite paramours — just ask Matt.

Because, one day, he just stood in front of their class and announced that he will marry Laura one day, with the promise of “Just you wait!” As expected, their class had a laugh over it. Besides, we know just how many of our childhood friends we have lost contact with.

If only they knew how precise his prediction would be.

Best Buds During Preschool

Matt and Laura stayed best friends through their preschool days, even though no one thought Matt was serious with his admission of love. Their playdates outside of preschool time carried on and they never missed each other’s birthday parties.

Although they were only four years old, their connection was obviously unique. It was definitely starting to look like Matt’s announcement was not so ridiculous. However, a significant change was coming for these friends, as preschool life was finished it was time to start kindergarten.

Sadly, soon enough, their friendship was to be tested.

Their Kindergarten Time Starts

Pretty soon, the day finally arrived and Matt and Laura were going to the kindergarten. After finishing preschool they were ready for the beginning of the next stage in their life.

The change to kindergarten is a huge change for every child, however, for Matt and Laura, it was made very pessimistic. These buddies from preschool had no idea whether they would be in the same class and soon became aware that their endless play dates may all be over.

They Enroll At Different Elementary Schools

What happened was that Matt and Laura weren’t in the same class at the kindergarten, and afterward, they weren’t even in the same elementary school. Obviously, this wasn’t an intentional choice that their parents made, instead it was enforced by the place where they lived.

Nevertheless, once they found out they wouldn’t get to play together so much from then on, these best buds were very distressed. Their parents only reassured them they’d still be able to have weekend play dates as they didn’t fully grasp the idea how attached these two were to each other.

The Rare Chances to Hang Out

Even though their parents had convinced the two friends that they’d still have their weekend play dates together, it was barely true. Time waits for no one and soon enough, the time Matt and Laura would spend together was continually decreasing.

Despite the fact, these two tried to play together on any occasion they could find. One year, they had this charming Christmas card photo made with two of their other friends. Regrettably, after finishing kindergarten and starting other grades, they just didn’t get to see each other as much anymore.

Ultimately, it was Christmas cards that became their single point of contact.

A Single Point of Contact: Christmas Cards

Over time, Matt and Laura were barely seeing each other. Even though they had once played together every day and celebrated Christmas together, now the friends would only hear from each other when their families got Christmas cards in the mail.

Even though they were missing each other, everyday life kept them busy with things like school, homework, family and new friends.

Out of Sight Out of Mind

Out of sight, out of mind, the saying goes. And it rang true for Matt and Laura. After a couple of years had gone by, the two former best friends were not enthusiastically waiting for the new Christmas cards anymore. By becoming older they were living their own independent lives.

It’s extremely easy to forget about the past once we have started to become adults, learn new things, meet new people and gain brand-new experiences. It would seem that Matt and Laura had had a great friendship in their childhood days, but they had matured and left it all behind.

Their Freshman Year Starts

Soon enough, almost 10 years had gone by and Matt and Laura were getting ready for the start of their high school life. It happened once more that they were enrolled in two different schools and at this point in time, they seldom remembered each other. Besides, a whole decade had passed since the time they were best friends.

But then, an extraordinary thing happened. While Laura was at the start of her freshman year, she saw a name pop up on her friend’s telephone.

None other than Matt Grodsky.

Remembering the Good Old Days

Laura was taken by complete surprise to see Matt’s name appear before her and all of a sudden she remembered all those precious childhood memories. After asking her friend how she knew Matt, it turned out that the two had met during their middle school days. All at once, the world felt immeasurably smaller.

Although she decided it was best not to dwell on it, Laura told her friend all about their childhood romance in preschool. But her friend had something else on her mind...

A Match Was in the Making by Laura’s Friend

As soon as Laura told her friend about her childhood romance with Matt, her friend had a mad idea. She was going to set them up.

After hearing this idea from her friend, Laura felt doubtful. Besides, she barely knew Matt now, they hadn’t talked for years. It was not possible for everything to be the same as it was. Or was it?

Matt Gets Laura’s Number

Naturally, Laura was anxious about being set up with Matt on a date. At the time she wasn’t even sure whether she ought to have a boyfriend. In her interview with People, she said: “I was a freshman in high school so I was like, ‘I don’t think so!’” Despite Laura’s doubts, her friend had a feeling about the two friends. She shot ahead and gave Matt Laura’s number.

Matt’s reaction was very unexpected.

Immediately Matt Texts Laura

As soon as Matt had a hold of Laura’s number, he sent her a text and within a flash the started chatting and agreed for a meeting. After choosing the date they opted to go to the movies together.

When they met again it was as if no time had passed at all. Matt told People in his interview that he felt it was love at first sight. Exactly like back in preschool, these two immediately clicked.

It’s a Match

Although they had been friends in preschool, there was no certainty that they would click now when they were in their teens. However, the moment they met again, it was like back in the old days of preschool. After their first date was over without any problems, these two became boyfriend and girlfriend and started formally dating.

Even though they attended different high schools, thanks to their driving licenses, it was simple enough to remain in a romantic relationship. Once more they became attached to each other and escorted each other to high school dances and other similar events.

Yet with college education coming up soon, changes were about to happen again.

A Difficult Choice Had to be Made

The couple was facing a difficult choice that had to be made in the middle of their senior year and with college coming up soon. As they had disconnected already before they did not want to forget each other again. And yet they were going to attend different colleges in different states and feared missing out on shared experiences.

As Laura told People: “Right after we graduated from high school, we were pretty hesitant. We were like, ‘Do we stay together? Do we try to make it work?’” Even though they had gone to different schools before, now there would be more than 1,000 miles between them.

Distance Made Their Hearts Grow Fonder

After a while, Matt and Laura decided to attend their respective colleges and try to make the relationship work even though it was long distance. Laura went to Northern Arizona University, while Matt moved to Chicago in order to attend Columbia College, putting 1,600 miles between them in the process.

Although distance hindered their affections when they were children, this time everything was different. Matt and Laura were devoted to making their relationship succeed.

Ready to Face the Challenge

Despite the fact they knew this distance would present a challenge, Matt and Laura liked each other very much and so they were ready to do everything it took to make their relationship work. Determined to fully experience the college life, they also made sure they kept their relationship healthy.

Different time zones made this particularly difficult for them. However, social media and Facetime made it possible for them to “see” each other at all times. Also, they were continually visiting each other in their new houses.

Half a Year Away

Even though there were social media and Facetime to help them keep in touch, there were long periods of time when it was not possible for them to see each other. The longest one was almost half a year once.

As they were going through college, they had both become aware of this one huge thing - they really wanted to be together. However the distance was starting to become an insurmountable obstacle for both, and Matt in particular. He saw that he had to make that change.

Senior Year

In no time at all, senior year came again, but for college this time. Starting their last year of school was something that Matt wanted to commemorate in a special way. As they were both at home during the summertime, Matt got the idea of a charming date.

Because they were giving their all in school, he decided to have Laura a surprising date which would help them unwind and be romantic. He had planned for them a picnic at their old preschool. How adorable, right?

However, Matt had something else planned as well.

Matt Had a Special Plan

Although having a peaceful and romantic picnic at the adorable location was in Matt’s plan all along, there was something else that he wanted as well.

Matt told the Huffington Post that “I convinced Laura that we were going to a picnic at the preschool. We had just finished up our junior year of college, so I framed it as a nice relaxing date.”

Even after being together all these years, Laura could never guess what was coming.

Laura was Deeply Moved

Although she knew there was a picnic in plan for the two of them, she had no clue that it was going to be at the preschool where they had met almost 20 years ago.

Matt was very enthusiastic and wanted to surprise Laura this way. For Matt, the preschool was an ideal symbol for celebrating their romance. Because he cherished their extraordinary love story, he wanted to bring Laura back to the place where it had all begun.

Matt’s Conspicuous Nerves

On the way to their preschool, Laura had already noticed that Matt seemed to be particularly anxious. As he was fidgeting in his seat the entire time during their car ride, she presumed it was because of the element of surprise of their picnic location.

After having arrived at their preschool though, Laura was deeply moved by the caring gesture. She was already feeling incredibly blessed to have Matt be a part of her life and now her emotions were getting the best of her.

Popping the Question

Already amazed by the picnic at their old preschool that Matt had planned for the two of them, Laura got even more astonished when he kneeled down in front of her and asked for her hand in marriage.

She was stunned.  “I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, is this happening?’ I saw the ring and was like, ‘This is gorgeous. I’m so happy with it.’ I had no idea,” she told People. Obviously, she said yes.

How was Matt able to surprise her by the engagement?

Matt Made His Plan Months in Advance

While Matt did propose to Laura on May 23, 2015, the plan for the special event had been made months before. He had already asked for her father’s blessing and even bought a magnificent engagement ring several months before asking the big question.

Additionally, Matt had his own brother hide at the preschool ground so he would be able to commemorate the movement on camera. The most adorable thing was that Matt had also used his parents’ old picnic set which his father had previously used when he proposed to Matt’s mother. His parents filled up the basket with cider and wedding magazines in advance.

Something even more amazing was waiting for Laura.

Proposing At the Place Where It All Started for Them

Matt had decided that he was not going to wait until graduation, even though they were both still in college. As far as he was concerned Laura was The One and he was going to make everything official. This is why he was determined to adhere to his preschool promise.

Matt remembers how it all went down, telling Huffington Post: “I proposed to her at the place it all began … our preschool classroom. When you like someone, you just kind of stand up and say it.” Indeed the same way he did it 20 years ago as well, and that’s how he did it now when asking Laura to be his wife.

Matt and Laura Get Married

On December 30, 2016, Matt and Laura got married at the Arizona Historical Society. For their first dance, they had chosen Elton John’s “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” honoring Matt’s many recitals of Disney’s lines back when they were children, as though they wanted to show just how perfect their true love is like it wasn’t enough that they were preschool sweethearts.

Officiating their marriage was Matt’s uncle, adding these great lines: “For most kids in preschool, it’s about finding your snacks and your sleeping mats, but for them, it was about finding their soulmates.”

The love story of Matt and Laura was only at the beginning...

Everybody Celebrated Their Love

Their wedding was, of course, very important, and not only to Matt and Laura, but it was made even more unique as they were able to share their story with friends and family. The best gift for the two of them was having everybody they love come together and commemorate their love story, dancing the night away.

For their interview with People, Matt and Laura remember: “Our favorite part of the wedding was the dancing and having everyone we love there to celebrate with us. We tore it up on the dance floor and it was great being surrounded by everyone who played a part in bringing us together.”

Honeymoon Destination: Maui

Once they were officially married, Matt and Laura wanted to keep the festivities going. As soon as they had said their vows they were on a jet, going to their honeymoon on the beautiful island of Maui. They had spent almost two weeks there, traversing the island up and down and looking into everything it had to give. Above all, they had finally enjoyed their time together.

Floating on cloud nine, Laura wanted to find a cute way to share their love story with the rest of the world. They never could have known what was going to happen.

Sharing of the Story “The Way We Met”

Matt and Laura remember always being told by their friends and family how unique their relationship was. Laura knew their relationship was out of the ordinary, and now, as an official Grodsky, she wanted to share the tale.

Using a cute snapshot of them at preschool with a more recent photo next to it, Laura shared the tale of how they met with “The Way We Met”. This Instagram account regularly shares cute stories of couples’ meetings and they realized they had to share Laura’s story the moment she had submitted it.

Going Viral

Matt and Laura told all about their fantastic romance which had started when they were only three years old. Matt said: “I was enamored with Laura as a child, and I still am to this day.”

The moment The Way We Met shared their story they had gone viral. Everybody enjoyed reading about their love story, and even though the couple thought people would like the tale, they certainly did not assume the response they’d get would be amazing as it was.

Thousands of people Loved Their Tale

Matt and Laura’s tale had, at first, got a little more than 30,000 likes and 1,000 comments when it was shared by The Way We Met. Afterward, Laura got a notification telling her that the tale had been shared with over 400,000 followers. And, soon enough, many media channels started to reach out to them to gather all the information they could on their lovely tale.

Media news such as the Huffington Post, The Today Show, and People, all ran a full-length story on them.

The Future of Grodskys

What lies in store for the Grodskys? The two friends have been married and living large for almost two years now in their home state of Arizona where Matt is employed as an account executive at a digital marketing agency, while Laura is working for a non-profit organization that helps to foster children.

Not long ago they had bought a brand new house and added personal touches to make it feel more like home.

Furthermore, they got a new addition to their little family.

A Puppy

This was one of their most significant achievements in the last two years - becoming parents. Well, in a way. Because after they got married they decided to add a fluffy friend to their family, a cute puppy named Kirby.

Matt and Laura have their hands completely full, dealing with their new house, new puppy, and working full-time jobs. Of course, all of that does not mean that a real baby is not in their plans.

For an interview with People, Matt and Laura talked about being parents one day.

Children Will Come One Day

Even though they are more than busy right now, Matt and Laura definitely have children in mind for the future. In an interview with People, Laura claimed: “We would love to have kids at some point. Right now we are focused on our new puppy Kirby and our new house.”

Not a surprise in the least that they wish to extend their family. Besides, these have been extremely busy few years for the two of them with graduating, getting engaged, marrying, buying a home, and adopting a dog.

Being Thankful for What They Have

Matt and Laura obviously have an unparalleled love story which started with them meeting at preschool at just three years old to not being in contact for almost a decade and then renewing their friendship and forming a loving bond almost 20 years later since their meeting. They are confident they’ll never forget their tale nor take it for granted.

In their interview with People, they said: “The best thing about our relationship is we are just silly and we appreciate each other every day. Having gone through a long distance relationship, you learn really quick how much the other person means to you and we value our time.”

Although Matt and Laura are still only newlyweds, they have been with each other for years now and they know many ways a relationship could be made to work. For them, the most important thing is being positive and having the drive for it.

Laura said that “My favorite thing about Matt is his humor, he always makes me happy and he is the most driven person I know,” while Matt added “My favorite thing about Laura is her infectious smile and her desire to help those who are less fortunate. She is a force for good and it’s inspiring to be around her every day.”
