Mother of four Tina Hines suffered a cardiac arrest and died for 27 minutes. When she awoke, she scrawled a message to her loved ones and gestured upward, as if to heaven. It just said, “It’s real”.

Does heaven exist?

What happens to people when they die? Nobody really knows the answer. Religion offers an explanation, and believers are certain that they’ll end up in a better place once their time on Earth has come to an end.

Does heaven exist?

Science, on the other hand, says that this life is all we have, and once our heart and brain stop working, we just live on in the memories of our loved ones.

Cardiac arrest

When someone’s heart stops functioning properly and fails to pump blood effectively through the body, it’s called cardiac arrest. When it happens, the victim loses consciousness and stops breathing, so if it’s not treated exceptionally quickly, it can often be fatal.

When oxygen can’t reach a person’s brain, they only have a short time before they can no longer recover. That’s why it’s so important that people who suffer from cardiac arrest get treated with CPR and a defibrillator as soon as possible. In the United States, about 350,000 cases of cardiac arrest occur outside of hospitals every year. It often comes on suddenly and can happen without any warning.

Tina Hines

That’s what happened to Tina Hines. She is a mother of four who lives in Phoenix, Arizona with her husband. She is a religious woman and a strong believer, and her faith is very important in her life.

Tina Hines

In addition, she had always been very healthy and worked out regularly in order to keep herself strong and active and to prevent things like cardiac arrest and other medical conditions. That’s why her husband Brian thought that she’s the last person who he would expect to suffer cardiac arrest. Nevertheless, something caused her heart to stop working. On that fateful day, Tina and Brian were all set to go on a hike with their friend Jeff.

Collapsing

As the group prepared to leave for their hike, Tina and Jeff were standing side by side. Suddenly, Jeff noticed that Tina was no longer next to him – she had collapsed and was lying on the ground unconscious. “Call 911!” Jeff shouted to Brian. At first, Brian didn’t understand what was going on.

Collapsing

Then he noticed his beloved wife lying on the ground, not moving. He pulled out his phone and dialed the number as fast as he could, hoping that Tina would be okay. When the operator answered, Brian explained what had happened. The operator told him that he had to start CPR immediately, and that an emergency crew was on its way.

CPR

Brian dropped to his knees and started performing CPR on his unconscious wife. Fortunately, he wasted no time and knew just what to do. He didn’t know it at the time, but this fast action was most likely the thing that made the difference between life and death for Tina.

CPR

He managed to resuscitate her a couple of times, but she kept losing consciousness again. While Brian was doing his best to save Tina, the paramedics arrived. A firefighter told Brian that they would take it from there, and Brian turned his wife’s care over to the experts. They loaded her into the ambulance and rushed her to the hospital as fast as they could.

Saving her life

The team knew how important time was in a case of cardiac arrest so they worked as quickly as they could. They brought out a defibrillator and repeatedly shocked her heart back into beating.

Saving her life

Even though they kept losing her, they kept bringing her back, too. In total, Tina was resuscitated a whopping six times before she finally stabilized. Eventually, they made it to the hospital where she was intubated and received further treatment.

27 minutes

Tina had been effectively dead for a total of 27 minutes. When she finally regained consciousness in the hospital, she was surrounded by her family members.

27 minutes

She couldn’t speak because there was still a breathing tube down her throat, but she had an important message that she wanted to convey to those around her before she forgot. She gestured to them for a pen and paper so that she could tell them what she had seen while she was dead.

The note

Someone handed Tina a pen and paper, and she proceeded to scrawl a message that nobody in the family was likely to forget. It was written in a way that was hard to read, but there was no mistaking what it said: “It’s real.”

The note

The concerned family members asked Tina what was real, at which point she nodded up above her, as if gesturing toward heaven. The family was stunned and grateful that Tina had made it through the harrowing experience.

What she saw

Later, once Tina was able to talk, she told everyone about what she had seen when she was not breathing for 27 minutes. She could clearly remember what she saw and she wanted everyone to know about it.

What she saw

“It was so real, the colors were so vibrant,” she insisted. Tina went on to explain that she saw a figure, which she believed to be Jesus, standing in front of black gates. Yellow light was emanating from behind the gates, and she was certain that she had seen heaven.

Faith

For Tina and her family, her vision was a confirmation of their faith. The words “it’s real” became a sort of rallying call for them, and it strengthened their belief in the church.

Faith

Tina was now certain that heaven awaits those who pass away, and she wanted to pass on her story to others to help them strengthen their beliefs as well. Tina’s vision and the note she wrote definitely had an effect on many people, both those who know her and those who do not.

A tattoo

One person who was profoundly moved by Tina’s story was her niece, Madie. Tina and Madie had always been quite close, and when Madie heard about Tina’s experience and what she saw, it encouraged her to change her life as well.

A tattoo

Madie decided to get a tattoo of Tina’s handwritten words on her wrist, and she shared a picture of the tattoo on social media along with Tina’s story. The post went viral and it helped spread word of Tina’s experience even further.

Near death visions

There are many stories of people who, like Tina, experience “heavenly” visions during near-death experiences. Many people talk about seeing their life flash before their eyes when they think they are going to die, or seeing a tunnel with light at the end.

Others see what they believe are the gates of heaven, like Tina, or other manifestations of what they believe heaven looks like. These visions are often thought to be inexplicable or mysterious, but there are some explanations for them.

Religious explanations

Believers like Tina and her family feel in their hearts that these visions are an indication of what’s to come following death. They may be proof of an afterlife, evidence that heaven truly does exist.

Religious explanations

It might give their life hope and meaning and the words “it’s real” have brought a great many people together. It may also reinforce their faith and prove that if they continue following their path, they will have good things to look forward to once their time on this planet has come to an end.

Scientific explanations

That being said, there are scientific explanations for visions during near death experiences like that of Tina. For a long time, people thought that there was no brain activity during these visions, so they thought that there must be a supernatural reason behind them.

Scientific explanations

However, a scientific study has brought some interesting results to light. The study analyzed the brain activity of rats that were undergoing cardiac arrest. The researchers watched what happened in the rats’ brains to see when activity stopped.

A surge of brain activity

Interestingly, the study found that there was a surge of brain activity in the moments after the heart stopped beating. In fact, the brain goes into a brief period of elevated activity that lasts about 30 seconds.

A surge of brain activity

In addition, the part of the brain that would need to be activated to trigger visions, the visual cortex, is indeed highly active during this time. This means that the visions could be coming from the brain itself, and not from some higher power.

Throwing it into question

These findings are enough proof for many scientists to question or even dismiss the idea that people who have visions during near death experiences are truly seeing the afterlife.

All they are seeing, according to these researchers, is a vision generated by increased activity in the brain during the moments after their heart stops beating. However, that doesn’t mean that they are trying to convince people that their beliefs about life, death, and faith are incorrect.

Further proof

Another reason that many researchers doubt the validity of these near death visions is that in order to get a glimpse into the afterlife, one would probably have to truly be dying.

Further proof

However, there are plenty of reports of people having such visions when they only think that they are dying, and aren’t medically in any real danger. Some researchers think that this proves that the experiences that people have are connected to what is going on in their brain rather than to an outside force.

Other visions

There are many stories of people who have had near death experiences, and they have varying visions. Common themes include a dark tunnel with light at the end, out of body experiences, a sense of love and peace, and many people report seeing deceased loved ones.

Other visions

One person reported being in a field of flowers, another met her father who had passed away years earlier, and another saw a hand reaching out to guide them but refused to take it and woke up in an ambulance.

A nice story

Whatever the reason is behind these visions may be, they sure make for nice stories. People get goosebumps hearing of the crazy things that people see when they are on the border between life and death.

A nice story

Tina’s near death experience story went viral, and inspired her and many others to live better lives. Whether she saw heaven or her vision was caused by activity in her brain, she saw what she saw and nobody is dismissing the importance of that.

Importance of immediate care

Cardiac arrest often happens suddenly, which is one of the things that makes it so dangerous. If Tina had been alone, or if Brian hadn’t rushed to give her CPR and resuscitate her, she wouldn’t have had much of a chance of making it through.

Importance of immediate care

When it comes to cardiac arrest, acting quickly to restore the flow of oxygen to the brain is vital. It increases the chance of survival from 10% to 45% – a huge difference.

A story of survival

Tina’s survival is, without a doubt, remarkable given the circumstances. That’s because about 90% of people who suffer cardiac arrest outside of the hospital don’t make it through.

A story of survival

It was completely unexpected and she and her family were caught off guard, but she survived to tell the tale. Cardiac arrest is often unpredictable and can happen with no warning. That’s why Tina was so lucky that Brian was nearby, and that he moved quickly to administer CPR, an action that greatly increases the chance of survival.

Living a full life

Since Tina survived her brush with death and had a vision of what she believes to be heaven, she is continuing to live her life to the fullest. She spends time with her family and continues to use her faith to guide her life.

Living a full life

Her story has spread all over the world, and has been translated into many languages. Tina is proud to continue to use her words “it’s real” to share her faith and her story, and it doesn’t look like she’s going to stop any time soon.
