Mother Panics When She Fails A Test to Prove Children Are Her Own

It is a known fact that motherhood is hard. Nothing prepares a person to have their bodies completely changed and to have their lives altered from what they knew as familiar. But it is also rewarding and one of the best things that can happen for some people. So imagine the pain of a mother who’s motherhood test says the children she carried for nine months each, are not really her children? That’s exactly what happened to Lydia Fairchild.

A Happy Mother

Lydia had two children with her then-boyfriend, Jamie., and was pregnant with their third child when everything happened. She was happy and loved her children with all of her heart. The family lived in Washington and had a pretty regular life. But because life can be pretty harsh sometimes, things started getting colder between Lydia and her boyfriend.

They disagreed often, and it seemed like the love they felt so strongly for each other was disappearing. The thought of separating from him terrified her, but it looked like the only option.

Before they split, she knew that hard times were approaching. But she had no idea that she was about to go through the hardest and most complex journey of her life. She never predicted that anything could happen in relation to their children, though.

She was their mother and hoped that she would be able to keep them with her while getting help from the government. But things weren’t as straightforward as they seemed. In order to apply for government assistance after they separated, she had to go through a long and painful bureaucratic road. But she was willing to do everything in her power to win.

Not Her Embryo

Government officials told her that in order to apply for support, the whole family would have to take DNA tests. They would each have to prove that they were, in fact, the parents of their children. Coincidently, Lydia was midway through her pregnancy with their third child.

Even though she had clearly carried all children, having doctors, nurses, and hospital employees as witnesses, the court still insisted on a DNA test. It was the procedure, they claimed. She had nothing to fear until she took the test, and the results came out negative. Her results suggested that the embryo inside her womb wasn’t hers, or related to her.

Hard Times

Everyone was completely stunned by the result, including the doctors and the lab team. But in order to understand how exactly this was even possible, it’s important to start from the beginning. When things started getting rough between the couple, Lydia wondered what she would do.

She wasn’t working at that time, and separating from her boyfriend would also mean that she would have to take care of the kids alone. She was afraid of what was to come. But the impact of their separation would have much more serious consequences, to the extent that she had ever thought was possible.

Proving The Children Were Theirs

Lydia finally gained courage and broke up with her boyfriend. When she was ready to move on with the process, she went to the Department of Social Services in Washington State. Her plan was to apply for government assistance, so she could have some security and means to provide for her three kids.

But before qualifying for government assistance, Lydia and her family would have to take a number of steps. Many of these were straight-forward bureaucratic papers, but the main one was based on a DNA test. Both Lydia and her ex-boyfriend, Jaime, would have to submit DNA tests so they could each prove that the children were their own.

No Reason For Fear

Lydia was confident; she had nothing to fear after all. She knew she had carried her children to term, and there was no way anything would go wrong, she thought.

She submitted the blood work and waited to hear from the lab. A couple of days later, a social worker contacted her, requesting a meeting. She didn’t think much of it, as it seemed like a routine procedure for what she thought was an almost finished process.

Looking For The Real Mother

When she arrived, Lydia felt that something was wrong. The social worker shut the door behind them and sat down in front of her. They then asked her with a worried face, which the children’s mother was. Lydia was confused by the question and thought it was a joke.

Brushing it off, Lydia replied that the children were hers. They didn’t take her answer and told her they wouldn’t ask again. She had to tell them who the real mother of the three children was.

Confusing Results

It turned out that the social worker had a reason behind her questions. Apparently, Lydia’s test results suggested that her children were not actually hers, while Jamie’s DNA showed that he was, in fact, the father of the three children. Lydia grew increasingly confused and had no idea how to react to the situation.

Everything that was happening was surreal, something out of a mystery movie. Yet, she was determined to prove to everyone that her children were hers and that there was something wrong with those results.

Access Denied

Unfortunately, because government assistance was pending on positive DNA results, Lydia was denied the assistance. Officials claimed that her claims did not match up with her results and that sadly, there was nothing they could do. They threatened to take her kids from her anytime and had many suspicions on who this woman who claimed to be the mother of the children really was.

Lydia was completely heartbroken. She knew she had a long road ahead of her, and even though disproving DNA results is extremely difficult, she was willing to give it a try.

Gathering The Evidence

In her view, she had no other choice. She tried to explain to her social worker that there was definitely something wrong with the result, but the social worker insisted that DNA results are proven to be 100% accurate. After drying her tears, Lydia started gathering the evidence.

She had tons of it, as it was important for her to keep her memories. So she went back home and grabbed every single thing she had to prove her motherhood.

Telling Her Parents

She started putting it all on the table, birth certificates, pictures of her pregnancy and deliveries, pictures of pregnancy tests, and all of her doctor’s information. That night, she shared everything with her parents. Her mother was sure she was joking, as what she was claiming was impossible.

She had been in the room with her daughter during both deliveries and had seen her grandchildren being born. She even got to hold each of them still in the labor room. Surely something didn’t make sense.

Going To Court

The day after, Lydia decided to contact her obstetrician. He had followed through both of her pregnancies and her children’s births and was more than willing to testify for her in court. After three court hearings, it turned out that all the witnesses she had didn’t help much.

In court, DNA results were basically taken as infallible, so she lost the case. She even tried to do DNA tests in other labs to see if something would change, but it didn’t. The results kept saying that she wasn’t actually her children’s mother.

Turning Against Her

In the last hearing, the judge suggested that Lydia should get a lawyer. After some time, her story started catching the attention of the media, and her case was suddenly known by thousands of people. The more people knew about it, the more she had accusations pointed towards her and Jamie.

Strangers accused her of and her ex-boyfriend of stealing the children from the real mother in order to easily get government assistance. She kept seeing her face on tv, on the internet, and even in magazines.

Finally A Lawyer

It wasn’t easy to find a lawyer who would be willing to defend her in court, especially as it meant fighting DNA evidence. Since most people were against her, it was hard to find anyone who would believe that she was telling the truth. But eventually, she was lucky to meet Alan Tindell.

Alan agreed to take her on, but not before he questioned every single fact about her pregnancies and children. But due to her assured responses and to the confidence she had in what she said, Alan decided to believe her.

Threatening To Take Her Kids

While Alan collected the evidence, Lydia was suddenly summoned to court again and was threatened with having her children taken away from her. At that point, she even started considering taking her children and hiding them so that no one could take them away from her.

It was in the midst of it all that Lydia found out that she was pregnant with her third child. Although the pregnancy came at a rocky time, she thought that this would be the proof she needed.

Waiting For The Birth

Government officials agreed to test her while she was pregnant. Once again, the results showed exactly the same thing, leaving everyone stunned once again. Finally, the court started wondering whether something was wrong. They kept testing her until she had the child, and still, she “wasn’t” the mother.

When the child was born, they took the DNA tests one more time. Even then, with the baby clearly born in front of them, the tests showed exactly the opposite.

Fearing The Worst

A couple of months passed with Lydia not being able to prove that the DNA results were wrong. She was completely depressed and closed herself from everyone. The media continued to add negative comments, with people still not believing her.

Even her father started doubting her, asking her just to tell everyone the truth so that everyone could move on with their lives. She feared every single day that someone would come and take her kids away from her.

A Similar Case

During that time, her lawyer was still doing his work. He kept gathering every single drop of evidence he could find. At some point, he came across another person’s case, in a medical journal, about someone called Karen Keegan. Apparently, this wasn’t the first time something as strange as this had happened.

When Keegan was about to get a kidney transplant, she and her children had to do DNA tests. Not long after, doctors called her telling her that her children and her DNA simply didn’t match.

A Brilliant Idea

Keegan, like Lydia, had no doubt that her children were hers. So she worked day and night with lawyers as soon as she healed from her operation. She had an idea. A couple of years before, she had had a thyroid nodule removed, and it was probably still possible to locate it.

After looking for it for days, doctors finally located the thyroid and tested it for its DNA. Surprisingly, the DNA matched Keegan’s son’s DNA for the first time. Finally, they were able to understand what had happened.

A Condition Called Chimerism

Keegan had a condition called Chimerism. Only thirty cases had been documented around the world, so it was an extremely rare condition, and it affected very few people.

The condition occurs when someone carries two different sets of genetic codes with them. Put simply, still in the womb; fertilized eggs will fuse into each other, becoming one. This is also known as “Vanishing Twin Syndrome.” The result is that the embryo starts carrying not only one DNA but its ‘twin’ DNA as well.

Contacting The Court Again

Greek mythology describes the phenomenon as a hybrid creature that combines various animals: a goat, a lion, and a serpent. After finding and collecting all of this information, Alan finally decided to call Lydia.

When she received the phone call and heard that there had been a similar case a couple of years back in Boston, she was ecstatic. Hope finally started coming back to her, and she was ready to move forward. She contacted the court once again.

Testing For Chimerism

Lydia asked the judge if they could postpone the case so she could do a test for chimerism. It was a complex test, in which scientists and lab specialists had to look for two different sets of genomes in one person. But Lydia’s case could be different from Keggan’s case.

While Keegan’s results showed that her son was related to her brother and to her husband. After taking the tests, lab researchers informed Lydia that sometimes the results could take years, so she would have to be patient.

Proving She Was Right

Eventually, Lydia’s court date approached, and she was terrified. As she walked into the courtroom with her children, she had no idea what was about to happen. When she sat next to her lawyer, she asked him what the stack of papers in front of them was.

He told her that it was proof that she wasn’t lying. Her tests had, in fact, concluded that she had two sets of genes, hers and her vanishing twins. Finally, she proved everyone that she had been telling the truth all along, and the judge dismissed her case.
