// Strangers Find a 50-Year-Old Purse And Owner Is Thrilled To Discover Treasures Hidden For Years

A Time Capsule

Many of us have misplaced items over the years. However, not many of us can say that we’ve lost something for decades. One woman never even realized that she had misplaced a once treasured item until she got a call from her former school. It turned out that her misplaced items had become a time capsule as the school uncovered what life was like for one of their former students back in 1954 – even if it was by accident…

The Good Times

It can be easy to look back at times in our life and realize there have been some fond memories over the years. In fact, 50% of people in a poll by The Guardian confessed they still think of their years at school as the best of their life. Many people are still close to their school friends while others head to school reunions every now and then. The rest? Some hold onto their report cards or school projects.

The Good Times

Discovering Secrets

Although many people hold onto their school yearbooks or photos with their friends, it can be easy for things to get misplaced as we grow older. Ann Caldwell is one of the many who has found something that she didn’t understand – even though it looked important. It was 2017, and Ann discovered a ring in her wardrobe. There was a good reason that Ann had no idea where it came from: it belonged to someone 1,000 miles away.

Discovering Secrets

Searching For Clues

Ann learned the ring belonged to someone who used to attend Weatherford High School and decided that she needed to reunite the jewelry with its rightful owner. She contacted the school where Chad Wilson, the superintendent of the school, helped look for clues. They uncovered two letters and a graduation date etched onto the ring. Chad soon noticed the C.S. stood for Coy Sullivan who graduated that year but had been looking for the ring since 1960.

A Long Journey

So how did the ring end up with Ann? It turned out that her late husband’s family lived in the town next to the school. Here, they ran a laundry business, and people from far and wide would arrive to drop off their clothes to be washed. Coy had taken something to the laundry business and left the ring in his pocket. It looked as though it was gone forever. That was until Ann found it almost 60 years later.

A Long Journey

Not Alone

Thankfully, Ann was able to hand the ring back to the owner and felt as though everything was complete. Coy knew it was the perfect item to wear to the school reunion in July 2019 as the class of ‘59 marked 60 years since they had graduated from the school. However, Coy Sullivan isn’t the only one to have lost something important to him over the years. One woman had no idea that she had misplaced her things until the school called…

Care In The Community

Greater Clark County Schools district is in charge of 20 schools across Indiana, making it the largest establishment in the state. To top it off, the team looks after more than 10,500 pupils where they pride themselves on their cutting-edge approach to helping students learn. This also means they are in charge of making sure that all of their buildings are up to date and equipped with everything they need to help people get the best education.

A Much-Needed Makeover

One of the many schools controlled by the district is Jeffersonville High School. The district decided that one of the buildings was due for an upgrade in 2019. The campus had shut down in 1971 as there was a lot of work that needed to be done, and the time had finally come to bring it back to life. Students had been learning in the East End district, but that should all change when the building work is completed in 2020.

A Much-Needed Makeover

Plenty Of History

It turns out that Jefferson High School has been at the heart of some significant events throughout history since opening its doors in 1913. As well as many curriculum changes, the school also helped pave the way of making education open to everyone in the ‘40s. Many people in the city thought of the building as a piece of history and were sad to see it dismantled. Little did the workers know that there was more history inside than met the eye.

Plenty Of History

Something Strange

The contractors started their work at the beginning of 2019 as they needed to carefully remove all of the old items before they could tear the building down to make way for a new one. In January, they were tasked with clearing out one of the school’s former science labs. They carefully pulled out the old furniture until one of the workers noticed something unusual. There was a strange, sparkling object caught up with the rest of the items.

Something Strange

Hidden For Years

It wasn’t long before the workers realized that it was someone’s purse. What they didn’t know was how it got there or who it belonged to. Thankfully, the contents of the bag were all the clues they needed to help tell a story of the past. The purse had sat hidden away for decades, but now it was about to help the school get transported back in time as they painted a picture of the past. The school wanted to find the owner…

Hidden For Years

Protected From The Elements

Many items that have been lost over the years end up falling victim to the elements. In fact, the construction workers admit they often find all kinds of things, but most of them have rotted away or been damaged by the sunlight. The bag was caught up in the cabinets, meaning it had been kept in the dark. They had no idea how it got there, but everyone knew that it must have once been very special to the owner.

Painting A Picture

Of course, the workers were desperate to open the bag and find out what was lying inside. There was plenty to see as the purse was filled with items, such as lipstick and tissue covered in coral lipstick kisses, a compact mirror, and a pin. There were also Juicy Fruit gum wrappers, a listing from the basketball team back in 1953 and ‘54, and even a bus schedule of the time. They all helped to paint a vivid picture.

Personal Additions

While all of the items fascinated the workers in their own right, there were some that seemed to stand out more than others. Alongside the personal items were also a handful of letters written to the owner of the bag. It appeared as though she was once highly popular at school as many of the other students wanted to take her to the prom. It wasn’t long before everyone on the team was caught up in her story.

Personal Additions

Hoping For A Date

One of the letters was addressed to Marty and was signed off by someone named Torchy. It turned out that Torchy had heard that Paul had already asked Marty to the prom, but he wanted to ask for a date before it was too late. The heartfelt letter stated that if Marty had agreed to go with Paul, then she should “please forget that I have asked.” However, if she hadn’t decided, then he wanted Marty to “please consider my invitation.”

Hoping For A Date

Another Mystery Man

There was also another letter from another student named Carter. He, too, spoke about Paul being “an alright guy,” but warned, “you’ll never catch him, he runs too fast.” It looked as though Carter wanted to assure Marty that he wasn’t “going back together” with Bobbie and they were merely walking to classes together. Carter seemed to worry about being friends with everyone and wanted to start “on the girls that I have already done wrong.”

Another Mystery Man

Piecing Things Together

Along with all of the personal items, there were also some newspaper clippings, a social security card, and some ID that told the construction workers that the purse had once belonged to someone named Martha Ina Ingham. This was the girl in the letters, and they uncovered that she was a senior in high school in 1955. This meant that she would be in her 80s by now, and had probably forgotten all about her missing purse.

Piecing Things Together

To The Internet

Greater Clark County Schools learned about the purse and wanted to see if they could reunite it with its rightful owner. In February 2019, the team decided that the best way to track Marty was through social media. They uploaded a photo of the purse and all the information they had about the owner and titled the post “Lost and Found Alert.” They hoped someone would know Marty or her family. It wasn’t long before they had some interest…

Found At Last

Hundreds of people soon commented on the post as it seemed as though everyone in the area wanted to get the purse back to Marty or one of her relatives. After a little investigating, someone found a profile that they believed to belong to the Marty in question. To top it off, one of her relatives spotted the post and shared it with Marty’s son. He then passed it on to his mother to try and help get those memories back.

Found At Last

Forgotten Item

Amazingly, the team found Marty and were able to send the purse back to her in one piece. It wasn’t long before Marty got to relive all of those school days with things that had been lost for over 60 years. It turned out that she had forgotten all about her purse until the construction workers found it again, but she was glad to have all of those memories back in one piece. However, there were still some questions…

Forgotten Item

The Ultimate Question

The people at the school hoped that Marty would be able to relive “fond memories” from her time at high school, but everyone wanted to know who took her to the prom. Was it Paul, the mystery man, or Torchy, the well-mannered student who was hoping for a chance? It turned out that neither of them were successful as Marty ended up going with Carter, the student who appeared to have dated most of his senior class.

The Ultimate Question

A New Life

It turns out that Marty has come a long way since her time at school. She has been married twice over the years, in addition to welcoming four children, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. To top it off, Marty now lives in Maryland but travels to Florida every winter to see out the colder months in style. She never realized that she had lost her purse. However, she was grateful to have it back in her hands once again.

A New Life

Reaching Out

Thankfully, Marty says that the purse brings back memories that she hasn’t thought about in a long time. That’s not all. The former student confessed that her school was always very close, and they all loved their basketball team. Finding all the old letters was enough to remind Marty of her former flames from school. It wasn’t long before she tracked down Carter, and the pair spoke on the phone as they relived all of their forgotten memories.
