Man’s Prank Backfired After Bids For His Girlfriend On eBay Reached $119,000

Dale And The eBay Girlfriend

If someone was to write a book on “Things You Shouldn’t Do On The Internet,” then this tale would be chapter one. The main villain would be Dale Leeks, whose conniving plot to get back at his girlfriend ended up backfiring. This man, whose listed occupation on Facebook is “full-time legend,” went viral after deciding to auction off his girlfriend, Kelly, on eBay. Little did he know he would get owned by his own prank.

Greaves And The Prankster

Getting to know the characters more, we think it’s fair to say Dale Leek’s actual job was not a “full-time legend.” In actual fact, he was a private landscaper and was friends with Kelly Greaves, a director of a heating company, for over a decade before they began dating. Knowing each other for so long meant that they already knew each other’s faults. Greaves knew that her boyfriend was a well-known prankster and luckily she enjoyed a humorous life too.

Greaves And The Prankster

Give And Get Back

When Kelly Greaves described her relationship with Leeks to CTVNews.ca. she said, “I think we got similar personalities. We’re both quick-witted.” While to some women his constant pranks and jokes could be hurtful, to Kelly it’s just another day and she is always ready to give it back just as good, “I think I’m one of the only few who dare to rib him back and such.” But was this next prank going to change her opinion?

Give And Get Back

A Playful Relationship

To some couples, a breakup would be definite if your other half humiliated you in public. But for Leeks and Greaves, this is how their relationship thrives. “We’ll try and humiliate each other — in a nice kind of way,” she explained. “But I think that’s what we like about each other. We like to stand up to each other…” However, after playfully whipping her boyfriend in a horse riding shop, Leeks would take revenge to a whole new level.

The Last Laugh

Although being whipped in a horse riding shop wasn’t the worst of pranks that the couple had performed on each other, Dale Leeks was in a playful mood and wanted to seek the best revenge. So, in the few hours before they set off for the evening, Leeks went onto eBay and did the unthinkable. He jokingly put Kelly up for auction on the bidding site thinking that it would create laughs, not knowing the last laugh would be on him.

The Last Laugh

A Miniature Collectible

Leeks put a lot of thought and detail into the advertisement. He described his girlfriend as a “miniature collectible” and compared her to a used car because of her “constant whining noise” and the fact “the rear end leeks a bit but nothing that can’t be plugged.” Although this comparison was hilarious to Leeks, he wasn’t sure how his girlfriend or the world would take it. Nevertheless, he got ready for their dinner date and left the auction running.

Exposing The Truth

While getting ready for their date night, Leeks couldn’t contain his excitement. He couldn’t look at her seriously and was constantly checking his phone. Greaves became suspicious of him and eventually, Leeks gave in and told her about the auction. Not really sure of how she would react, he got the site up and let her read the car-related description he created about her. We are not sure how anyone would take being described as a constant whiner…

Laughing It Off

Fortunately for Leeks, Greaves found the ad hilarious. She could not put his phone down, reading the description over and over again, including calling her bodywork as “fairly tidy but close up shows signs of wear.” Greaves found it so funny that she even posted the ad to Facebook. She did it as a way to “show him up” to her friends in a way that was saying, “look what I got to put up with now.”

Seeing The Funny Side

On the way to dinner, Leeks and Graves continually checked their phones. Rather than feeling sorry for Graves and empathizing with her, she said, “all of his friends were liking it and thought it was hilarious – and my friends thought it was hilarious.” Leeks was delighted that his girlfriend saw the funny side to his prank and Greaves was happy that she was receiving likes and comments on her Facebook post. Then the couple checked the auction…

Seeking Bids

Still – no bids. At first, Greaves jokingly felt upset with her friends for not bidding on her. In a way she wanted them to do it, even if it was just for fun. She recalled saying, “Aww, I’m not getting any bids.” However, in regards to her boyfriend, she thought that having no bids was “ultimately what he wanted.” She reckoned that “he didn’t want it to go very far.” But that was about to change.

Seeking Bids

The Bidding Begins

The couple arrived at the restaurant and were enjoying their meal. For a while, they had completely forgotten about the auction. Greaves assumed that aside from her Facebook friends, no one else would really see the eBay ad, and therefore “it didn’t matter.” However, Leeks’s phone began to buzz in his pocket. Gradually, it buzzed more and more. Checking his phone, he looked over the table at his girlfriend, “but I wasn’t really telling her the scale it had gone.”

The Bidding Begins

A Real Bidding War

Leeks had been bombarded with not only messages but some bids too! The first few bids were from friends who had seen the ad from Greaves’s Facebook post, but it wasn’t long until “it just majorly spiraled out of control. The bids started going mad.” A bidding war had begun and Leeks’s plan had backfired. What he thought was just a joke ad on eBay was now an actual real-life bid with people offering real money.

Revelations And Regrets

The post had blown up online and Leeks was in trouble. He later revealed that at the time he thought to himself, “Oh no, what have I done?” Neither of them really expected that the post would go viral in the way that it did. Leeks weighed out what could happen if the bidding continued. Would he really have to sell his girlfriend? Was there a possibility that these bidders were also having a laugh too?

Revelations And Regrets

Feeling Uncomfortable

Leeks wasn’t the only one that was worried. At the dinner table, the couple were both taken aback by how much the bidding had increased. The two reportedly felt a “little bit shocked” but also a bit “uncomfortable.” Nevertheless, the couple thought they should do what they usually do, and began to see the funny side. Taking a closer look at the bid, they watched how many times it had been seen and refreshed to check the new amount…

Worldwide Bidding War

The next morning when the couple checked the progress, they noticed that the post had accumulated 81,000 views and the highest bid had reached an astonishing $119,000. In other words, that’s how much Leeks’s girlfriend, Greaves, was currently worth on eBay. Bids were coming in from all over, including Europe, Australia, and the United States. Whether it was his car-like description or the photo he attached, a lot of people wanted to know more about the “collectible” up for grabs.

Questions With A Side Of Innuendo

Dale Leek, who lives in Colchester, Essex, was inundated with not just a few but hundreds of messages from ‘potentially interested’ buyers. Many of which were trying to be just as witty as Leek was with a lot of questions having an innuendo. Some asked if they were able to “take her for a test drive,” while others requested “close-up pictures of the bodywork.” Luckily, the couple saw the funny side of these and read on.

“At one point I was getting a message every 30 seconds. I received hundreds of messages,” Leeks explained. “We had a lot of funny messages on eBay from people but some of the messages I found the funniest you probably couldn’t repeat.” Leeks particularly enjoyed one which read, “Can you tell me how many previous owners she has had? Also, what’s her service history like?” But did Leeks really not mind people talking like this about his girl?

Reported And Removed

Although the couple saw the funny side, eBay did not. After a day the ad was removed. According to the auction site, it went against their policy of selling human body parts or remains. In other words, eBay did not like the fact it was a distasteful joke on human trafficking. “They told me I couldn’t sell a human being,” Leeks said. Nevertheless, the couple was relieved that the auction was over, but Greaves was still curious…

Crying In Style

Leeks said, “Kelly turned round and said to me ‘so what price would you actually have sold me for? Would you have been upset if someone actually bought me?'” In his usual manner, Leeks thought about the amount the bid reached before it was taken down, and joked to his girlfriend, “I’m not going to lie, I would have been quite sad to see you go, but it wouldn’t have been so sad ‘cause I would have been crying in my Ferrari or my Lamborghini.”

Thick Skin

They say opposites attract, yet in Kelly and Dale’s case, being similar makes them a match made in heaven. To some women, Leeks’s remarks could come across as nasty, whereas for Greaves, they were just Dale being Dale. When recalling the event, Greaves mentioned that she thinks running her own business has enabled her to develop a thick skin.“If it offended me, I never would have gotten far (being together) because it would have been over a long time ago,” she said.

Not Such A Bad Sell

According to Leeks, his girlfriend was less than impressed at first. But as the auction went on, she became more interested to know how much she was going for. Kelly even told her boyfriend that she was quite happy he was selling her and “if the new owner had that kind of money then she was going to have a better quality of life.” Although it almost backfired, Leeks reassured, “I wouldn’t sell her and love her to bits.”

Haters Gonna Hate

Unfortunately, not everyone saw the funny side of Leeks’s prank. Many people were critiquing what he did, suggesting he was supporting human trafficking as well as suggesting problems with their relationship. But Greaves just said they are “being a little bit too sensitive.” She added, “That’s not what was going on. But I can see their point of view. But Dale is not P.C. [politically correct] at all. If you get offended easily, stay away from him.”

Haters Gonna Hate

A Normal Day

Fortunately for Dale, he knows he has found the right woman for him too. “She couldn’t get into a relationship with me like this if she couldn’t take a joke,” he told CTVNews. “This is a just a normal day living with me, really, I do stuff like this all the time.” However, aside from being described by Greaves as “a naughty child,” she does admit he is a great dad to her kids from a previous relationship. Meanwhile, for Dale, he is thankful he hasn’t been kicked off eBay!
