WWII Veteran Has Road Accident Outside Chick-Fil-A, Then Manager Springs Into Action

They say that not all heroes wear capes, and in this story, it’s definitely true. Some heroes are just walking down the street, minding their own business, when all of a sudden, they notice that someone is in desperate need of help. They take action, and as a result, they change that person’s life. Sometimes though, there is a chance that one hero can end up saving another hero, in a truly heartwarming moment. This is exactly what happened when a WWII veteran showed up at his local Chick-Fil-A and begged for help. One of the workers didn’t hesitate to help, but he was completely unaware that others were watching…

Two Heroes Collide

It seems like Chick-Fil-A is a conveyor belt for heroes and good samaritans these days. The latest example came when a World War II veteran got himself into a road accident just outside the popular fast-food chain.

When he told the staff about what happened, one of the managers knew he needed to do something about it. Little did he know though that someone was watching in the distance and recorded a video of him while he saved the day…

He’s A Regular

Staff and customers alike at Chick-Fil-A Quarterfield Crossing know him as Mr. Lee. However, not everyone realizes that he is one of the greatest heroes around. Mr. Lee served in World War II and these days, he is one of the most loyal customers at this Maryland Chick-Fil-A.

He might be 96 years old, but every day, without fail, he turns up for his ritual chicken biscuit and coffee. Then, on one fateful day, Mr. Lee’s day went a little differently…

He Was Shaking

It was supposed to be normal drop-by at Chick-Fil-A for Mr. Lee. His plan was to have his classic chicken biscuit and coffee and carry on with his day. However, his routine took an unexpected turn on the way to the restaurant.

According to manager Rudy Somoza, he was “shaking” and “almost in tears” by the time he got in line to place his order. Another manager couldn’t help but overhear Mr. Lee’s concerns and this is what kicked the story into motion…

9 Years & Counting

This is the point in the story when store manager Daryl Howard sprung into action. 29-year-old Daryl has been working at Chick-Fil-A for nine years now. “I love working at Chick-Fil-A,” he said.

“Obviously, I wouldn’t NOT like working there. It’s a great place and I get free food.” However, free food isn’t the only reason that he loves working there. Daryl loves nothing more than putting a smile on his customers’ faces. Daryl had no idea this day would go the way it did…

It Was A Normal Day

Most days at Chick-Fil-A are pretty normal for Daryl. He has numerous responsibilities, such as taking orders, delegating work to fellow employees and ensuring that all customers are happy with their chicken.

The day of this story should’ve been like any other day. “It was just a typical morning,” he said. However, as soon as Mr. Lee showed up with a worried expression on his face, Daryl knew that his day had just taken a unique turn…

His Car Was Missing

As he tried to connect the dots as to why Mr. Lee looked so worried, Daryl looked outside and noticed that the veteran’s car wasn’t where it usually is. “I noticed that he didn’t park in his normal spot,” he said.

Realizing that something was probably wrong, Daryl proceeded over to Mr. Lee, who was patiently waiting in line. Daryl has a good memory for most of his customers. However, he could never forget Mr. Lee, who he started talking to…

Small Talk

Daryl immediately noticed that Mr. Lee was much more talkative than usual and could not place exactly why. “We got talking, and he asked me a few questions like, ‘hey, you still have my home number?'” he said.

“I was like, ‘No, I kind of lost it because I went looking for it…Next time you come in, I’ll get the number from you.'” However, it was what Mr. Lee said next to Daryl that immediately made him concerned…

He Needed To Walk Home

The next thing Mr. Lee told Daryl was that he needed to walk home today. Normally, he would drive to and from Chick-Fil-A. “I just gave him a funny look and I was like, ‘why did he say that?'” Daryl said.

At that point, the store manager was convinced that the WWII veteran was covering up the truth in order to save face. At that point, Daryl decided to probe Mr. Lee for answers, asking him what exactly happened…

Road Accident

After asking him what exactly happened, Daryl could tell that Mr. Lee wasn’t comfortable giving him a straight answer. Eventually though, he did. “
Well, I kind of hit a curb,” Mr. Lee said. It didn’t sound too severe at first.

People hit curbs all the time with minimal damage caused to their vehicle. However, when Daryl went outside to check what the problem was exactly, it was clear as to why Mr. Lee was so shaken up by what had happened…

He Drove With A Flat Tire

Daryl went outside with Mr. Lee to take a look at his car, which was parked around the corner. “I wanted to go out to investigate so I asked him to take me out to his car,” he said.

As soon as he took one look at the vehicle, Daryl could tell that the veteran had a flat tire. He had hit the curb a few blocks away, before driving the rest of the way to Chick-Fil-A with a flat tire.

Mr. Lee Was In Tears

As soon as Daryl identified what the problem was, it became increasingly clear that Mr. Lee was not in a good frame of mind. In fact, he was shaken to his core from what had happened.

“He was shaking…in tears…saying he barely made it to the store on three tires because one was bad,” manager Rudy Somoza said in an interview with CNN. It didn’t take long before Daryl returned to Chick-Fil-A and had a word with Somoza…

He Needed Help

As he returned to the restaurant, Daryl took co-manager Somoza to the back and explained to him the situation. He made it clear that Mr. Lee was in desperate need of help and somebody at Chick-Fil-A needed to do something about it.

If it needed to be him – then so be it. “Daryl informed me he needed to help this gentleman right now,” Somoza said. So, without hesitation, Daryl grabbed his toolbox and rushed back to Mr. Lee’s car…

Time To Take Action

Daryl reassured Somoza that it should only take 10-15 minutes to get the job done. He told Somoza to work the register while he was outside. Just like that, he went back to the car with his toolbox to get the job done.

At first, Mr. Lee was worried that he was getting Daryl in trouble for taking him away from his responsibilities at Chick-Fil-A. However, the young man insisted that he was more than happy to help. But was he able to fix his car?

Fixed In No Time

Just as he promised, Daryl managed to fix the tire in no more than 15 minutes. “I went and got my car keys, got my jacket out of my car, changed his tire,” Daryl said. “It took about 15 minutes.”

The veteran was surprised how quick Daryl got the job done and he was sure that this would be the end of the story. Little did Daryl and Mr. Lee know though that somebody in the distance was watching this all happen…

He Was Watching Them

Both Daryl and Mr. Lee had no idea that somebody was watching them from afar. It turns out that it was Somoza, who had got someone to cover for him while he watched Daryl help out the WWII veteran.

Somoza knew that Daryl was performing a huge act of kindness and in that moment, decided to take photos of the deed. “I thank God I was in the right position to be witness of this touching moment,” Somoza said.

Classic Daryl

Although it was a warm surprise to see Daryl fix Mr. Lee’s tire, Somoza confirmed that this was nothing new. As far as he was concerned, this was a typical thing that Daryl would do. “His act of kindness was beautiful.

Daryl has always been so helpful to anyone in need,” he said. Daryl also confirmed that this wasn’t the first time he had changed someone’s tire while on the job. As soon as the job was done, Mr. Lee was overwhelmed with joy…

He’s So Grateful

Mr. Lee couldn’t express enough to Daryl how grateful he was for what he had done for him. A few days later, the veteran returned to Chick-Fil-A and thanked Daryl once again while he ordered his chicken biscuit and coffee.

“He thanked me and he was very much appreciative,” Daryl said. Ultimately, the store manager was just happy that the vet was safe. However, that wasn’t all that Mr. Lee did to show gratitude to Daryl that day…

Having Breakfast Together

Make no mistake about it, this wasn’t the first encounter that Daryl had with Mr. Lee. Seeing that he has worked at Chick-Fil-A for the last nine years and Mr. Lee has been a dedicated customer for just as long, they actually know each other pretty well.

“We had breakfast,” he said. “Because I was supposed to go on my break so I went and had my breakfast with Mr. Lee.” It turns out though that this was just the beginning of this remarkable story…

So Much Love

Eventually, someone posted the photos of Daryl’s act of kindness on social media. It was just a matter of time before the photos went viral. “One of my co-workers…posted it to our Chick-Fil-A page and someone posted it from that page to another and it just kept going and going,” he said.

According to him, many people online described him as a “real American.” “Chick-fil-A has some pretty awesome employees!” one person wrote. However, Daryl didn’t actually realize that the post became a hit…

He Had No Idea

Despite becoming an overnight celebrity, Daryl didn’t actually realize the story had become so popular until someone told him a few days later. “I don’t get on Facebook a lot,” he said.

“People just kept telling me ‘your famous,’ I kept asking them ‘why?’ They wouldn’t tell me.” Then, when a friend sent him a photo of the footage and told him to go on Facebook, he saw the overwhelming amount of reactions and comments that the story had received.

Local Celebrity

Since then, Daryl’s story has traveled far and wide and the young man has even ended up on radio shows. A couple of weeks after the story became a hit, WGTS 91.9 invited the Chick-Fil-A manager onto their show and he was given the Hometown Hero award for his wonderful act of kindness.

During the interview, he shared what inspired him to take action, while also delving deeper into his life and what he plans to do in the future…

Global Recognition

It’s not just back home that Daryl has been getting recognition for his heroism. He revealed that he had a conference call with Atlanta Chick-Fil-A, who gave him a standing ovation and invited him to see the headquarters.

“We are grateful for Team Members like Daryl Howard who genuinely care about the customers and communities they serve,” Chick-Fil-A reps wrote in a statement. “And for restaurant Operators who create an environment where Team Members are empowered to go above-and-beyond to meet guests’ needs.”

Big Dreams

During that interview with WGTS 91.9, Daryl was also asked what he plans to do in the future. Although he knows that he’s on his way to owning his own Chick-Fil-A one day, Daryl is still very young and wants to keep his options open.

“There’s thoughts of me owning a Chick-Fil-A, there’s a process with everything,” he said. “I have to get back into school, and I have to take time off from work to do that so…one day? Maybe. Still young.”
